Literally every day someone will ask me if they have the worst toenails I have ever seen. To help with the debate, here is a picture of some pretty bad toes.
As we age and lose the ability to perform self care tasks, toenails are an aspect of our bodies that can be seriously neglected. Toenail cutting is a task that requires a complex interaction of functions: hand strength, back flexibility, knee and hip movement and reasonable vision. If you throw in very thickened and deformed toenails as shown here, the task becomes nearly impossible. I would think this task would be beyond the scope of an average son or daughter to manage. If you are to carer for an older person, it would be wise to check their feet from time to time so that problems such as this get attention while they are still manageable.
